ANDALUSIA – Alabama Southern's Lady Eagles claimed their first conference win of the year, downing the Lady Saints of Lurleen B. Wallace Community College in a 73-71 thriller.
The Lady Eagles fell behind the homestanding Lady Saints 41-32 at the half but a 41-30 run in the second half propelled ASCC to the two-point win.
Five Lady Eagles were in double figures in the game. Leightra Nance paced the attack with 17 points while Lakeshia Pickens came off the bench and added 16. Jasmine McCants had 13 points in the game while Lakeyia Dejarnette and Ieisha Hopwood contributed 12 points each to the effort. Defensively, McCants had 16 rebounds for the Lady Eagles.
The win ups the Lady Eagles to 6-10 overall and more importantly to 1-0 in conference play.
Eagles Come Up Short In Opener
The Eagles came up short in the conference opener, falling to the Saints, 71-55.
LBW jumped out to a 34-27 lead at the half then outpaced the Eagles 37-28 in the second half to claim the big conference win.
Three Eagles were in double figures on the night. Charlie Wilson, Desmond Williams and Antonio Chapman had 14 points each in the game. Defensively, Wilson had 14 rebounds followed by Desmond Williams with 10.
The loss drops the Eagles to 3-13 overall and to 0-1 in conference play.
The teams return to conference action Tuesday, Jan. 13 as they play host to Chattahoochee Valley. On Thursday, Jan. 15, the teams travel to Mobile to duel with Bishop State. The Lady Eagles begin action both nights at 5:30 followed by the Eagles at 7:30. On Tuesday, Jan. 20, the teams travel to Bay Minette to do battle with the Sun Chiefs of Faulkner State. Action for that games begins at 5:15 with tip-off of the women' game. The men's game begins at 7:15.
