
(BIRMINGHAM, Alabama) - Lawson State Women's Basketball Team (24-9) has just claimed the 2015 Alabama Community College Conference Championship this afternoon defeating Wallace-Hanceville (26-6) by a score of 66-50.
As state champions, Lawson State automatically advances to the NJCAA tournament in Salina, Kansas, to be held March 16-21.
"I am very happy and excited for my team," said Aubrey Wiley, head coach of the Lawson State women's basketball team. " These young ladies showed great determination throughout this season. They earned it."
The Lady Cougars racked up a number of honors, including: Tournament MVP, Kara Rawls; and All-Conference First-Team, Kyla Rooks, Ashley McCrear and Larian Scott.
Coach Aubrey Wiley was honored as ACCC Coach of the Year.
"This is truly exciting for our athletic program and college," said Coach Carlton Rice, athletic director for Lawson State. "This win is also historic for the college being the first time in school history that the women's team has won the ACCC Conference Championship."
